Doctor of Philosophy in Accounting (research track)

2. Entry requirements

Master's Degree and Transcript in a relevant applied major.

Bachelor's Degree and Transcript in a relevant applied major.

English Language Proficiency:

  • For foreign applicants apply for the scholarship: TOEFL iBT 60, IELTS 6.0, PET/FCE 169 (English certificates must be valid for two years from the test date up to the application date) 
  • For Vietnamese applicants and foreign students apply without scholarship: TOEFL iBT 45, IELTS 5.0, PET/FCE 160 (English certificates must be valid for two years from the test date up to the application date)

  6. Statement of purpose (500 words)

  7. Two (02) Reference letters (at least one (01) letter of Master thesis’s advisor)

  11. Health check report from official clinic or hospital within the last 6 months

  12. Applicants who completed their degree in a language other than English are required to submit evidence of English proficiency

3. Program structure

The program structure is a system of theoretical and practical knowledge that is designed synchronously with the method of teaching, learning and evaluating learning outcomes to ensure learners accumulate knowledge, gain the necessary competencies according to the published expected learning outcomes corresponding to the university level. The curriculum of Ton Duc Thang University is built in a way that is compatible with the program of the world's renowned universities according to the rankings of QS and THE but is adjusted to suit the conditions and realty in Vietnam and the training target of Ton Duc Thang University.

Periodically, the university reviews and evaluates the curriculum to ensure that doctoral students meet the requirements of society in terms of professionalism after graduation as well as update the changes in technology and new business methods, etc. This process has the full participation of key stakeholders including scientists, employers, alumni, students, and lecturers. The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD.) in Accounting program has been delivered since 2020 to train human resources to meet the labor market and global integration trend, to help students to be more active and self-study, to approach the latest training approaches in the world.

4. Research topics

Selection of the research topic is based on the outcome of a formal consultation between the candidate and the primary supervisor and/or secondary supervisor. Research topics include, but not limit to:

  • Issues in auditing and assurance services
  • Issues in financial and non-financial reporting
  • Issues in management accounting
  • Issues in organizational governance and accountability
  • Issues in taxation
  • Issues in accounting analytics
  • Issues in accounting information systems
  • Issues in financial implications of political connections
5. Expected learning outcomes
  • Upon the completion of PhD. program, graduates will be able to demonstrate an advanced knowledge within their specialized areas. Upon the completion of PhD. program, graduates will be able to demonstrate an advanced knowledge within their specialized areas.
  • Graduates’ analytical and methodological skills will be well developed to facilitate specialized research project.
  • Graduates’ creativity and innovation will be strengthened to enhance their ability to design and conduct original research in their chosen field.
  • Graduates will be able to instruct undergrad courses in their specialized areas.
  • Graduates will be able to deliver and present the results of their research in an effective and perceptive manner.
6. Graduation requirement
  1. Complete at least 18 credits of core and elective courses;
  2. Completed a PhD. dissertation proposal;
  3. Complete a PhD. dissertation and defend it successfully in front of a Committee;
  4. Published as the main author at least one (01) ISI paper/ two (02) Scopus papers in the field of Accounting – Economic – Finance – Business.
7. Career opportunities

The dominant of our Doctor of Philosophy of Accounting candidate generally will continue their career in academia. A piece proportion pursues a career in the government or industry. Our doctoral graduates could be found lecturing in institution all over Vietnam and SEA region.
