Accounting Students Achieve Outstanding Results at the 2023 National Award for Science and Technology

The year 2023 marked an impressive milestone for students of the Faculty of Accounting, Ton Duc Thang University, at the National Award for Science and Technology for Students in Higher Education Institutions—an annual and highly competitive award organized by the Ministry of Education and Training in collaboration with the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the Vietnam Fund for Supporting Technological Creations (VIFOTEC). With nearly 10,000 submissions from 103 universities nationwide, the award recognizes student research projects that demonstrate academic rigor, analytical capacity, and impactful scientific contributions. This year, the Faculty of Accounting proudly had three research projects honored, reflecting both the dedication of the students and the strong academic guidance provided by their supervisors.

The project titled “The Impact of Intellectual Capital on Financial Performance: Evidence from Listed Companies on the Vietnamese Stock Market”, supervised by Dr. Le Thi My Hanh and MSc. Ngo Tan Lam Ha, was awarded the Third Prize. Conducted by students Pham Tran Giang Quynh and Le Quynh Nhu, the research investigates the strategic role of intellectual capital—a key intangible asset—on the financial performance of Vietnamese listed firms. The project was highly evaluated for its solid theoretical foundation and robust empirical approach, contributing meaningful insights into how intellectual capital shapes firm value in the knowledge-based economy.

Two additional projects from the Faculty received Consolation Prizes. The first, “The Impact of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Disclosure on Earnings Management (EM): Evidence from Listed Companies on the Vietnamese Stock Market”, was completed by students Bui Thi Lan Anh, Tran Ngoc Hong Tuoi, and Nguyen Nhat Ha Vy under the supervision of Dr. Le Thi My Hanh and MSc. Ngo Tan Lam Ha. The research addresses earnings management—a topic of strong interest among academics, regulators, and investors—while analyzing how CSR disclosure influences managerial behavior. The project demonstrates the students’ awareness of contemporary corporate reporting practices and their implications for transparency and governance.

The second Consolation Prize was awarded to the project “The Impact of Sustainable Finance on the Performance of Listed Companies in Vietnam”, supervised by MSc. Nguyen Thi Thanh Huong and conducted by students Nguyen Thi Nhu Yen, Nguyen Thi Tu Anh, and Phung Thanh Thao. By exploring the emerging field of sustainable finance, the study offers timely insights into how sustainability considerations affect corporate operations and performance amid increasing global emphasis on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors.

The achievements of 2023 highlight the growing research capacity of Accounting students and demonstrate the Faculty’s commitment to fostering a strong academic environment that encourages inquiry, innovation, and engagement with real-world issues in accounting and finance. These accomplishments bring pride to the Faculty of Accounting and further affirm its position as a dynamic academic unit within Ton Duc Thang University. The Faculty extends its congratulations to all award-winning students and supervisors and looks forward to continued success in student research in the coming years.
